Does pure CBD impair driving?
In an on-road study in the Netherlands, vaporized CBD-dominant cannabis didn’t impair the ability to stay in lane. In Australia, volunteers who swallowed 15, 300 or 1500 mg of pure CBD showed no impairment on simulated driving or attention tests, and no one felt intoxicated. Still, the researchers note that a small effect on some measures couldn’t be ruled out completely.
Sleepiness and attention
The European leaflet for the approved CBD medicine states that, because of sleepiness and sedation, the medicine can have a major effect on the ability to drive and use machines. Patients are told not to drive until they know how the medicine affects them. In university students who took 300 mg of pure CBD, lapses in attention lasted slightly longer. Alcohol and sleep medicines can increase sleepiness.
Products containing THC
THC clearly impairs driving. In the Dutch study, cannabis containing THC impaired the ability to stay in lane 40–100 minutes after use; adding the same amount of CBD didn’t prevent this impairment. According to an analysis combining eighty publications, after vaporized THC most skills recover in about 5 hours and nearly all in about 7 hours; with swallowed THC, this takes longer. According to a review of THC products taken by mouth, the effects can last up to 8 hours.
Roadside tests
Two widely used saliva test devices gave no positive results in volunteers who swallowed pure CBD. But with CBD oils containing small amounts of THC, positive results could occur both in saliva (by lab measurement) and on urine tests. A test can come back positive even if the person doesn’t feel affected.
The law in Turkey
Under the Karayolları Trafik Kanunu (Highway Traffic Law), drivers who have taken narcotic or stimulant substances are banned from driving. Police use test kits for this; people who dispute the result give a blood, saliva or urine sample. Under an amendment in February 2026, a driver found to have taken these substances gets a heavy administrative fine, their license is canceled, and at least five years must pass before they can start driver training again. If you use a product that may contain THC, keep this risk in mind.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I wait after taking CBD?
There’s no official waiting period for pure CBD. The leaflet for the approved medicine advises not driving until you know how the medicine affects you. With products containing THC, impairment can last for hours.
Can I drive after taking CBD with alcohol?
Alcohol raises the level of CBD in the blood, and together they can increase sleepiness. Taking the two together and driving increases the risk.
Will a product I take in the evening affect my driving the next morning?
In a small study of people with insomnia, an oil containing 10 mg of THC and 200 mg of CBD taken in the evening didn’t impair simulated driving 9 hours later; only one of 28 tests showed a small drop in accuracy, and at hour 10 people felt slightly more sedated. But this is a single, small study of 20 people; if you feel sleepy in the morning, don’t drive.
Will a roadside test mistake pure CBD for THC?
In a study with two common devices, pure CBD gave no false positive results. The problem is the THC that may be in the product.
